The Avala TV Tower, which was destroyed in 1999 during the NATO bombing of Yugoslavia (now Serbia), was reopened in a moving national ceremony today.

" I am not going to say: \‘The Avala Tower is now officially opened\’. That\‘s because, for us, it was never officially closed. We just didn\‘t see it for a while, but it was always there with us. Of course, I am delighted to be opening this tower, but I wish that no other Mayor ever has to reopen it again. We have it, let\‘s preserve it."

The Avala TV Tower, which was destroyed on April 29, 1999, during the 78-day NATO seige on Yugoslavia, was reopened today in a moving national ceremony. Nearly 11 years to the day, it’s been rebuilt and is again the tallest structure in Serbia, a testament to the fortitude and determination of the Serbian people.

Meat burek from Cafe Pita, a Bosnian restaurant right here in Houston, Texas. When my guests were here visiting from Belgrade last year, we went here on the advice of a friend. We weren\‘t disappointed. The food is very authentic and got two thumbs up from my guys. :)

Anyone who knows me knows how I feel about that and about America\‘s hand in this travesty.

I mentioned the reason that I changed the format of this web site was so that I would be less likely to dwell on unpleasantness and instead keep things upbeat. But this is too significant a date in Serbian history and I will therefore never, ever forget what this country did to Yugoslavia and her people. And I hope you won\‘t either.

Milan Stankovic has been selected as Serbia’s entry into this year’s Eurovision contest being held in Oslo, Norway.

If you\‘ve been a previous visitor to this site, you\‘ll notice something slightly different. I\‘ve just switched from WordPress to Gelato CMS and converted this site from a regular blog to a \“tumblog\” like you see at http://www.tumblr.com. I think it fits better with my posting style and it will also prevent me from going on some long-winded rants. I\‘d rather focus on the beauty of Serbia and her people rather than any unpleasantness. This is my favorite passage from Momo Kapor\‘s book, \“The Serbian Mentality.\” \“There are few things in Belgrade that I have not seen elsewhere. Perhaps only three: its rivers, its sky and its people…. \“Clouds scud across the sky where the Sava gives way to the Danube, combining mists with eatern and western winds — that dramatic Belgrade sky that resembles a huge celestial battleground. The spiritual state of its inhabitants is portrayed in this sky at any moment of the day. \“People who grew up on a stone hill beneath such an exciting panorama cannot be but broad of gesture, stormy of temperament and of changing mood….\” Yep, that sums up some of my closest Serbian friends to a \“T\”.
