Amerikanka.net was created by me, Joni Mueller, an American girl (Amerikanka) living and working in Houston, Texas, after reading so many hateful and erroneous statements and assumptions made about the Serbian people. But how did I come to know about Serbia at all?
Five years ago, I *might* have been able to tell you where Yugoslavia once was. But I didn’t know the difference between the Rambouillet Agreement and Shakespeare’s sonnets. Five years ago, I didn’t know that someone I would come to love so very much had spent 72 days in pure hell. Had spent his birthday in a bomb shelter.
The good thing is that about five years ago, I met someone in an online community, someone who would become my best friend, confidante and business partner. He showed me that despite all the obstacles, neither he nor his people will be kept down, and they won’t lie down, and they won’t go away. From this wonderful friend, for whom I would give my very life, I was shown the true meaning of the concepts truth, honor, selflessness and love.
From this wonderful friend, I've come to know and love Serbia and her people, their warmth, humor and indomitable spirit, despite seemingly insurmountable odds. My friend was instrumental in that epiphany. Because of him, there is new music to be enjoyed, films to watch, poetry to read, much to learn. He's opened my eyes, shown me things about his country -- and mine -- and shared bits and pieces of his culture with me.
And I want to turn around and share the beauty and joy that is Serbia with the rest of the Internet. This site will be (hopefully) a showcase of all that is great and wonderful and culturally enriching about Serbia and the people who call it their home. Enjoy!
